Mark, Teacher (Crewe), on raising student aspirations

We've found angling courses have improved student behaviour in school because they feel they have something to works towards. These students are not always successful in school, because education doesn’t necessarily provide for them and that’s why we’re always looking for different ways to engage them and say look there is a future out there for you. Angling intervention courses impact on school lessons because the more switched on the students are the more they are likely to learn. It’s about giving them choices in life so they say I’m not just going to do this when I leave school because there’s nothing else but instead open their eyes to different possibilities. Some of the kids have got jobs through working with Get Hooked On Fishing. That’s impressive because I don’t think they would have ever thought of such jobs in the first place. These students really didn’t know what they were going to do, they drifted along. Angling intervention courses are about changing their aspirations about what they want to do
