The Fishing4u project is run in association with Active Hastings. Originally set up in 2002 to use angling to engage young people in deprived communities in the Hastings area, it was incorporated into provisions advertised through the councils Active Hasting Scheme. The result is a nested approach where angling is offered as universal provision, but where young people from deprived communities, or those particularly excluded, are targetted through direct invitation. Making targetted provisions within universal offers helps to dispel some of the stigma associated with overly targetted programmes.
Fishing4u is also distinctive in that the staff have come primarily from a coaching background in other sports, the coordinator of the project explained that he looked for staff who were able to engage young people and then built up the angling skills they would require through regular skilling up sessions rather than limit recruitment only to those with prior angling experience.
